Ashford Castle is a five star hotel, located on the northern shore of Ireland’s second largest lake, Lough Corrib, half an hour from Galway City. Once the country estate of Lord Ardilaun and the Guinness family, it was transformed into a luxury hotel in 1939.

The Castle’s great hall is lavishly decorated with rich panelling, fine period pieces, objects d’art and masterpiece paintings. Guest rooms are of the highest standards and many feature high ceilings, enormous bathrooms and delightful lake views. The main dining room offers superb continental and traditional menus. Before and after dinner, guests are entertained by harpist or pianist. The hotel is open all year round.

Ashford Castle offers a full range of country sports, in addition to fishing, clay pigeon shooting, horseback riding, archery, Irelands’ first school of falconry and an exclusive nine hole 3,000 yard golf course which features mature trees and generous greens. The course is complementary to residents and all the necessary golf equipment can be hired.

The Fishing

On Lough Corrib the fishing is mainly for wild brown trout and fly-fishing starting at the end of March with the duck fly. In April the olive hatch can provide good sport with the famous mayfly following in May. June & July can provide very exciting dry fly-fishing in the evening time.

Cong River has one of the best Salmon runs in Ireland with Spring run fish starting late March and grilse arriving late May and on into July. Both fly fishing and fly tying lessons are available.
