Carton House is the ideal country retreat on Dublin’s doorstep, only 30 minutes drive from Dublin Airport and 20 mins from Dublin’s City Centre. The hotel combines historic tradition with contemporary flourishes. Built in 1739 by the 19th Earl of Kildare, Robert Fitzgerald, as his family’s country seat. Carton House sits on 1,110-acres of parklands. Royalty, musicians and stars of the silver screen- from Queen Victoria to Grace Kelly – have passed though the doors of Carton House and its timeless appeal has been thoughtfully preserved into a 165 bedroom hotel, golf & leisure resort.
Carton House offers a full range of activities and the biggest challenge is finding the time to experience them all. The fishing is superb at Carton but if you decide to take a rest from angling why not try your hand at archery, clay pigeon shooting or simply spoil yourself in our Aveda spa & leisure facility. When it comes to food and dining experiences, you’ve certainly got a choice at Carton House. The Linden Tree is Carton House’s celebrated award winning restaurant – where elegant dining meets creative flair. Nestled among the Estate’s soaring Linden Trees, the multi-levelled interior has been designed to accommodate glass walls, wide skylights and floor to ceiling picture windows – or try out the informal and relaxed athmosphere of the Kitchen Bar. With our chef preparing dishes with the very best of local produce, guests can enjoy a diverse range of Irish cuisine promoting artisan food producers: from contemporary to more traditional dishes featuring mouth-wateringly fresh seafood, tender meats and tempting desserts.
The Fishing
Carton House situated by the Rye Water provides the perfect backdrop and Trout filled waters to provide a well-deserved escape from busy city life. Helpful tips, friendly advice and casting tuition are available from the experienced ghille for beginner fly fishers to experienced anglers. Whether you prefer standing by a pristine river or fly fishing leisurely by a Lake, Carton House provides ample access to Trout and Pike.
The Rye Water offers anglers excellent year-round fishing opportunity. Tucked tightly into the wooded Rye Valley the Rye Water flows for 4.5km through the grounds of the hotel. The Rye Water shares the same characteristics as the famous Chalkstreams of southern England and Normandy. This ideal habitat welcomes a large population of wild Brown Trout offering superb fishing in a magical setting throughout the season. For a variety of scenery and fishing species, Carton House has access to the Blue Ribbon Rivers of the east coast and prime locations on the River Liffey, Lough Owel,The Boyne and The River Slaney. A limestone river, the Boyne offers the visiting angler fantastic fishing with a number of fish in excess of 5 or 6lb taken annually making the Boyne one of Ireland’s premium wild Brown Trout fishing waters. With superb hatches of Olives and Sedges the Boyne is a river that can make that dream of a ‘fish of a lifetime’a reality.
Carton House offers guests access to the River Liffey, a personal favourite with the Head Guide due to its excellent fishing with prolific fly hatches. The River Liffey boasts exceptionally clean water with a great variety of runs, riffles, glides and pools to choose from giving Carton House access to what many consider the most productive beat on the river between Celbridge and Straffan.
Home of the World Champions Fly Casting Competition in 2006, Carton House offers anglers access to a complete east coast fishing plan. Great value angling packages are available from €310 per person sharing. Along with casting tuition for the intermediary angler, expert ghillies provide fly-fishing tuition for beginners.
