Ballyvolane House & Blackwater Salmon Fishery

The fishing improved in July and the flood during the second week of the month brought the first decent run of fish this season. Large summer salmon and grilse were running right through to the upper beats throughout the second and third week. Our anglers enjoyed some excellent sport as the flood dropped and cleared. Ballyvolane's fishermen landed mainly grilse with an average size of 4.5lb all on the fly. Some larger salmon from 7lb to 12lb were caught during the second and third week. Both the upper beats and the lower beats fished well. The biggest success was Ben Horler from Yorkshire took 6 fish from 3lb to 12lb on the upper beats all on the fly during the second week on the month. John Hamilton from Wicklow had two fish on the fly at Kilbarry on 25 July. The flood during the last few days of the month rendered the river unfishable but should bode well for the beginning of August. We still have a couple of places available on our 2-day fly fishing course on 20 and 21 August.
