[ June 2008 ]
Peter Mantle reports that once the weather broke at the end of June, the dismal catches seen earlier in the month at Delphi immediately improved . Just when it was beginning to look very grim, after 12 weeks of near drought conditions, the rain came back from Spain.
Of the 34 salmon caught in the month, 26 came in the last week, including a smattering of fresh grilse. The best fish was Reinhart Mittman’s 10-pounder from Finlough, the smallest Udo Felsner’s mighty specimen of 1lb 7oz from the Rock Pool. But, in general, the fresh grilse were of a decent size, mostly weighing between 4 and 6 lbs..
The total catch for the season, as at the end of June, was 108 salmon – well down on the 10-year average of 228 but slightly better than at the same stage in 2007.
The top rod in the month, yet again, was Werner Zirngibl from Munich, who took four fish for his week ranging from 1_ to 8 lbs.
With a wet start to July, hopes are high for better catches and the main grilse run has yet to arrive.
