The run of grilse which we would normally see in July was delayed until August when over 40 salmon were taken on the Newport River and Lough Beltra - all on fly.  In addition, an equal number of seatrout  were caught and released.  This was, despite the fact, that fishing effort was very light with many days with no one fishing.
Denis Coughlan from Newport/Dublin caught the first salmon of the month taking 3 grilse on on the river the 9th  - all returned.  This created interest and next day Pat Smith of Dublin took two salmon 10lb and 5lb - both fresh and with  sea lice.  Local man, Oliver Corcoran, took 3, as did Paul Hayes of Dublin - all on the river as Beltra remained unfished.  Later in the month Oliver Corcoran took 4 grilse on the river and lost two - a good evening's fishing.  Other successful anglers included Barry Kenny of Dublin who took 4 grilse one day and two a few days later.   Jimmy Lawlor took 2 salmon, 1 grilse and 3 sea trout one day and 9 sea trout and 1 grilse on another day - all of the river. Most of the anglers sportingly kept only one salmon.  Sadly many of our visiting anglers come  in July and so missed the best of this seasons fishing.  Water levels were high throughout the month facilitating  easy access into the system.
