James Stafford reports that The sea trout and salmon smolts continued to migrate downstream from Tawnyard Lough throughout the month – there appears to be an increase in the smolt run this season but this cannot be confirmed until the end of May. After eight weeks of imprinting the 20,000 salmon smolts in the holding tanks at Aasleagh were released directly from the tanks into the Coronation Pool on April 3rd. The smolts which were released from mid afternoon onwards were observed in Killary Harbour some three hours later. The smolts, which are of one sea winter origin, should return as grilse for the 2010 season.

The first of the spring salmon were recorded on the counter at Aasleagh Falls early in April, with an increase in numbers of large fish as the month progressed. There has been very little angling pressure on the river to date and as such no fish have been caught. Given the right conditions prospects look good for the coming month. For details on special accommodation and fishing packages including exclusive fishing on the lower river please contact the manager, James Stafford at 095 42252 or erriff.fish@iol.ie.
