APRIL REPORT - SOME NICE SALMON · 1 May 2010
A flurry of good fish in the last third of April gave the month’s catches a measure of respectability. In all, 23 salmon were taken in April, bringing the season’s tally to 33.
Three fine fish over 14 pounds were taken in the month – one by Willie Cotter (Dublin) from the Holly Pool, one by Pat Molloy (Dublin) from Finlough and the third by Nick Holding (England) from the Meadow Pool.
Peter Morris (England) had a fish of nearly 13 pounds from the Rock Pool and Christopher Jarman (London) landed one of just under 12 pounds from the Waterfall Pool. Billy Marshall also had a fish of just under 12 pounds from Finlough, Ian Scofield (England) had a 10-pounder from Doolough, which also yielded 9-pounders for Sean Moogan and Cian Murtagh – the latter Cian’s first ever salmon.
Other notable firsts were Dubliner Tom Gumbrielle’s first Delphi salmon, taken on a mini-tube in the Rock Pool after many years of bad luck, and Londoner Keith Salvesen’s first ever salmon on fly (taken from Finlough on a Bastard Ally).
Water levels in the month were frequently low, so the catches, which were about average in number for April, were not too bad. But the average size was agreeably elevated. In all, 6.5 inches of rain fell in the month, 4 inches of which came over Easter Monday & Tuesday.
