Angling Report 29th. August to 10th. September 2010.
Water levels were normal at 0.6 meters to the 4th. of Sept. Heavy rains increased levels to 1.86 meters on the 5th. Levels then dropped to 1.3 meters on the 6th. There was another massive spate of 2.4 meters on the 8th. and water levels then fell to 1.25 meters by the 10th. Overall angling pressure was light on the river during the last few days of August and the first days of Sept. A total of 40 salmon & 23 sea trout were caught during the period.
Mr. Jean Francois Calvar and his brother Jean Jacques Fr. caught 7 between them on mainly Orange Shrimp patterns. Mr. David Dugdale, UK. released 5.5lbs. fish taken on a Stoats Tail. A Munroe Killer was successful for Mr. Kenneth Mills, U.K. catching a 5lbs. fish in the Bridge Pool on Beat 9. Mr. Peter Huggard UK. fished the river for a week and caught 12 salmon best 11.5lbs. taken in the Broken Bridge Pool on Beat 5. Greg Forde, Galway caught 2 in the Guage Pool and Falls Pool. A Yellow Shrimp pattern was successful Mr. Eamonn Cusack, Limerick catching 7.25lbs. fish in the Middle Garden Pool. Mr. Alan McGurdy, Dublin returned a nice sea trout of 1.25lbs. taken in the Upper Square on Beat 9. Mr. John Dryburgh and John McFadgean, Scotland had 3 from Beat 5. Mr. Martin Sesselmann, Germany caught his first ever salmon on a Cascade in the Falls Pool – this was followed by another taken on a Garry Dog in The Hill on Beat 5. Mr. Dermot Seymour Ire. had 5 sea trout in the School House on Beat 3. Mr. Stephen Jones and Michael Stuart, Dublin had 2 salmon and 2 sea trout on Cascades in I day. Mr. Morgan and Mr. Fairhurst, UK had one each from Nee’s Run on Beat 6 on a Shrimp Fly and Clan Chief.
Angling Report 11th. to 17th. September 2010.
It was a week of varied angling conditions on the Erriff with heavy rains accompanied at times by gale force winds. Overall there were excellent water levels on the Erriff during the week. Levels were recorded at 1.1 metres on the 11th. then rising to 2.3 metres overnight on the 12th. Thereafter levels fell gradually from 1.4 metres to 1.0 metres by the end of the week. There were still very good numbers of fish showing on Beat 9 and although fish were starting to colour up there were still good fresh fish amongst them. A total of 48 salmon and 18 salmon were recorded for the week with a lot of salmon being released by anglers.
The Athy Salmon Anglers Albert Caffrey, Donal Chambers, Michael Vincent, and Paddy Donegan, had a great week catching a total of 22 salmon and 6 sea trout – most of the fish were returned to the water including a salmon estimated at 10lbs. taken in the Falls Pool on Beat 9. Arthur Muckian, Dundalk had 2 salmon taken on Beat 4 and Beat 9 and young anglers Killian Duffy released a fish of 7lbs. taken on a Cascade in the Otter Pool on Beat 7 and James Muckian released one taken on a Cascade in Kings Pool on Beat 4 and retained a sea liced grilse taken in the Upper Guage Pool on Beat 9. Mr. Fairhurst, UK. recorded 1 salmon and 3 sea trout taken on Beat 7. Mr. B. Shaw, caught I salmon and a sea trout in the Colonel’s Pool on Beat 6.
Mr. Henry Hosinger, and Mr. Norbert Meier, Luxembourg had fish 4 fish from the Garden Pool on Beat 9 and the Boat Pool on Beat 5 - best fish 6.5lbs. & 5lbs. Dr. Bart Maloney and Liam Maloney, Loughrea had 4 fish from Beats 6 and Beat 9. Mr. Sam McMenamin, N. Irl. returned 2 fish taken on a Stoat’s Tail in Jenkins Pool on Beat 2. Mr. Ken Wickham and Niall Wickham returned one each from the School House Pool on Beat 3. Mr. Ends Kenny, Kildare had one on Beat 5 on a Black Shrimp and lost another in the Garden Pool on Beat 9. A Thunder & Lightening and a Hairy Mary were successful flies for Mr. Nigel & Marcus McCorkell, UK. who returned 2 fish estimated at 7lbs. each taken in Wanklyn’s Dam and Mickey’s Run on Beat 7, Mr. Michel Winthrop’s Party France fishing the Erriff for the first time had 5 fish salmon -best 10.5lbs taken by Mr. L. Marcoz on a Lady Falaci in the Falls Pool on Beat 9. Both salmon and sea trout continued to pass through the counter every day and prospects are good for the remainder of the season.
Angling Report 18th. to 30th. September 2010.
The Erriff showed once again in true fashion what a spate river really is - heavy rains increased river levels to 2.0 metres on the 18th. then falling to 1.1 metres on the 21st and rising again to 1.8 metres on the 22nd. of the month. Levels were then recorded at 2.2 metres on the 23rd - falling to 1.9 metres on the 24th. Thereafter levels fell slowly to 1.0 metres on the 28th. Just as the season was ending levels increased from 0.9 metres to 1.1 metres. Anglers reported seeing lots of salmon on all the beats with salmon still to be seen at Aasleagh Falls. Total catch 47 salmon and 14 sea trout.
Dr. Bart and Liam Maloney had 4 salmon from Beat 9 on the 18th. Local anglers fishing the river on Sunday 19th. caught 6 salmon - Willie Mc Donnell caught a 5lbs. fish in the Dog Pool on Beat 2. Stuart Fleming had 1 from the Falls Pool on a Willie Gunn, Peter Coyne had a sea liced fish in the Square Pool on Beat 9. Donovain Brinklow had 3 including a sea liced fish of 7.5lbs. taken on a Shrimp Fly in the Falls Pool and lost a bigger fish at the net.
Mr. Frieder & Eva Hompesch Germany had 5 fish for the week all taken on fly from Beats 4, 6 and 9. A Grey Shrimp pattern brought success to Mr. J. Cabeza, Spain who fishing the Erriff for the first time had 3 salmon including his first ever salmon which he retained and sportingly returned another 2 to the water the following day.
Mr. John Dardis, Kildare caught and released 4 fish in 2 days taken on Shrimp patterns. Mr. K McNamara, Kildare returned a 5lbs. fish taken on the Willow Pool on Beat 6. It was a red letter day for Jonathan Murray and Stephen Coulter, Ballymena, Co Antrim who fishing the Erriff for the first time caught and released 8 salmon in one day with 7 fish taken on Beat 6 before 2-00pm on the 24th - successful flies were the Bann Special and a Yellow Dick. Andre Replat, France had one from the Coronation Pool on Beat 8 and another from the Garden Pool on Beat 9. Mr. Conor O’Leary Dublin released one taken on a Daddy in the School House Pool on Beat 3.
Mr. A. Muckian, caught a 4 lbs. fish on a Cascade in the Garden Pool on Beat 9. James Stafford returned 3 fish all taken on the Erriff Green & Gold. Mr. Stuart Woodhead, UK. returned 6 fish caught in the Sally Pool on Beat 7 and in Kings Pool & Poleen on Beat 4 and another 2 taken in the Garden Pool on the 2nd last day of the season. The last day of the season was successful for Mr. Gerard Turner fishing the Erriff for the first time caught a grilse in the School House Pool on Beat 3. Donavin Brinklow had two good sea trout estimated at 1.5lbs. and 2lbs and 10 brown trout caught on a Daddy on Tawnyard Lough in an afternoon. Derrintin Lough produced 12 brown trout to one rod in an afternoon. The last fish of the season a sparkling fresh fish of 8.75lbs. was caught by Mr. James Keogh, Dublin in the Falls Pool on Beat 9.
The total catch for the season was 374 salmon and 260 sea trout. The run of salmon through the counter was 2813 and 2731 sea trout. It is satisfying to know that there is a good head of fish in the river for spawning later in the year.
