More often than not fishing gets off to a start in April at “Rock House” although if March is sufficiently wet, salmon can be found in mid to late March.

On this occasion March was quite dry so true to form the rain and salmon arrived in the first 2 weeks or so of April.

Fish showed early in the month and some nice looking springer's were hooked and lost in a heartbeat in some very nice conditions indeed.

The first fish fell fowl, I’m glad to say, to Sean May from Sligo, a regular face on the Owenduff, and a skillful angler to boot. Sean lost a springer of about 10 pounds the previous day just below the wall pool in wonderful conditions, however on the 7th day just like god !! he finished the job and landed a beautiful spring salmon weighing in at 9 and a half pounds, the first to bank for this year’s season.

Conditions were patchy for the next few days ; however, on the 13th April a German angler, Willie Behr, took and released a beautiful 12 pounder hooked on a silver grey tube fly fished on a fast sinking line, and a short time later the same day took a 10 pound springer on the same tackle, conditions were really good.
Many thanks to Paddy McDonnell for photos of the fish that will be posted on the Rock House web site.

The web site www.rockhouse-estate@com looks amazing and truly opens a window on this remote beautiful wilderness that is the Owenduff.

The weather turned very dry in the later half of April, dry hard conditions unsuitable for angling.

Over all catch 3 spring salmon and 3 lost.

Regards and tight lines till May !
