2011 Mayfly

The first week of May brought fantastic fishing, definitely the early bird caught the best and fattest worms, The Bentley party of five anglers were beaming with smiles having experienced their best Mayfly fishing in years. James Montague, the novice dapper of the party got seven excellent fish on the dap, the best weighing 3.5lb, while the more seasoned fishers of the party caught on average four good trout each on the dry fly.
Alas the weather took a turn for the worst, the north-northwest winds made fishing conditions poor and impossible at times. Towards the end of the month, fishing did pick up. James Nixon caught a lovely 2.5lb trout on the dry Mayfly. Many small fish were caught over this period. Throughout the month and even well into June there have been some great Mayfly hatches. It is a pity the weather conspired against us.

Mayfly in Oughterard is always full of good humour, the loyal anglers that come to fish it are a very special bunch, they like to catch fish, to enjoy the fun, the camaraderie and the chance to catch up with everyone. It is a very special time for everyone involved. Here’s hoping for a better Mayfly in 2012. We are now thinking about a second hatch of MAyfly in July when hopefully the weather will be kinder.
