Fishery Report » Ballyvolane House & Blackwater Salmon Fishery
[ May 2008 ]

Summery of Weather: Dry throughout the month, river height at summer levels.
Fly Hatches: N/A
Quality of fishing: The dry weather resulted in difficult conditions with low water levels and high water temperature.
News of Interest: Ballyvolane House saw the second batch of students graduate with flying colours having completed the 2-day salmon fishing course with fishing guide Norman Gillet. The course is based at Ballyvolane House and Blackwater Salmon Fishery. It is designed for up to 4 participants under the tuition of Norman Gillett, who is both a qualified instructor holding the Salmon & Trout Association National Instructors Certificate (STANIC), and a member of the Game Angling Instructors' Association (GAIA). All aspects of modern fly-fishing and spinning techniques are covered but emphasis is placed on as much practical fishing as possible. Courses are held throughout the season, subject to beat availability. All tackle is provided.
Prospects for the next month: We need a heavy flood to freshen the river up and facilitate a fresh run of summer salmon and grilse.
Upcoming events/competitions: Salmon Fishing Course is scheduled for 19, 20 & 21 August. We still have places available so book early to avoid disappointment.
