GFHI April-May Report from Camillaun Lodge
There was some excellent fishing in the early days of April - we got a nice bag of trout on the 9th using wetfly olive patterns under the surface.
Robert kelly (Dublin) with Greg Forde, 4 fish were kept, with the best one being 2.5lbs, which tasted very nice indeed!
May 2012
The Mayfly fishing was patchy as a consequence of the Arctic temperatures Many anglers fished dry flies; wet flies and the dap! The photo shows some of our regular anglers from Wales gliding through the waves. There were some fantastic hatches of Mayflies and many large trout seen feeding on them. Dapping proved very effective when the wind was obliging, The consensus was that it was a good Mayfly most anglers experienced good spells of fishing, however the cold easterly wind left some people disappointed.
Every year I make the same observation, Mayfly anglers are a rare type, they love the challenge that it brings and rejoice in the great fun and company that is synonymous with Mayfly fishing on the Corrib. In terms of catches, the early part of May saw some very good fishing. Mike Bray’s party (England) caught 8 trout, keeping 4 for the table, they enjoyed their time in Camillaun. Alasdair and Graeme Mc Laughlin, ( N Ireland) caught 12 trout and kept 1. Vic Goddard had good fishing, catching 37 trout over 5 days all in around 1 lb and ¾ Richard Kelly had a great day’s fishing taking 3 trout, the heaviest being 2and ¾ lb. Towards the end of May, conditions improved but many of the hatches were disappointing, the fish had gorged themselves and were not inclined to take them.
Our attention now turns to June and the prospect of some grilse fishing, there is plenty of water rushing past our windows here, the fish if they have any sense will make haste while the going is good!
Other news, our bees are settling in very well and seem to be busy as they should be! All our baby birds have flown the nest much to the disappointment of our cat and finally our son has just started his Leaving cert exam so all quiet on the western front! We are running a June fishing special and also an experiential package- check our website www.camillaun.com or follow us on facebook.
