Fishery Report » Delphi Lodge and Fishery
[ March 2009 ]

Peter Mantle reports that March was unusually dry but this did not seem to deter the spring salmon from running and the catch for the month was 28 springers, which was above average.
The size of the fish also increased significantly and two very big fish, by Delphi standards, were landed – in fact, these were the two biggest Delphi salmon for the past five years.
Heinz Hoefler from Munich bagged a beautiful, fat, sea-liced 15lbs. 4oz. springer in the Meadow Pool. But even that was bettered by Jonathan Smalley’s 16lbs. 9ozs. fish from Doolough. Jonathan had lost a very big fish on the same lake in 2008, so this was particularly appropriate recompense.
Heinz Hoefler went on to catch caught five more fish (his other five weighed 8, 8, 8.5, 9.5 and 9.5 lbs.). Hans Majeron bagged three springers in his week, 8, 9 and 9lbs.. Werner Zirngibl took two fish, 13 & 9.5lbs., as did Marcel Dittrich, 9.5 & 6.5lbs.. Peter Scheissl had a 12-pounder while two of the Delphi ghillies also struck lucky - Peter Joyce with a 9-pounder and Sean Moogan with an 8-pounder.
Other successful March rods included Malcolm Rathbone, who bagged the first of the season off Doolough (7lbs), Carol Scott, who caught her first ever salmon weighing in at 9 1/2lbs, the Fermanagh trio of Mike Shortt, Brian Shaw and Billy McNeary had one fish each, 6, 7 & 6.5lbs. Rocky Moran, had a fine 12-pounder, Peter Morrison (6½lbs), Bertrand Fenart (8lbs) and Laurence Lock with three fish, 6 1/2, 6 1/2 and 11lbs.
Of the 31 spring salmon taken so far this season, seven have come off Finlough, two from Doolough and 22 from the River. The productive river pools have been Turn (3), Quarry (1), Rock (1), Holly (2) , Deadman's (2), Grilse (1), Schoolhouse (1), New Island (1), Whin (5), Waterfall (2), Meadow (3).
