[ June 2012 ]

Steady but slow is how I would describe the fishing this month. Total landed was 72 and the quality of the fish was excellent, with Charles Cooper landing a stunning 17lbs6ozs sea liced fish on the 21st.
Would I have expected it to be better? Given the conditions, 258.7mms or 10.1” spread fairly evenly throughout, probably yes, although run times are not as they were 15 years ago, they seem to be later now.
The first week in June saw water conditions that were quite low initially and then we got a huge flood on the 7th with 73.7mms. This gave the system a good flush. Total landed was 17. Notable catches during the week were Kurt Roth from Switzerland 3, Manfred Wolf, Germany 2 and Paul Wymes from Dublin 4. Frenchman Thierry Leverrier also managed to land his first ever salmon.
The second full week we landed 24 fish. It was a good mixture of old time regulars and new comers some of whom managed to land their first ever salmon.
Alan Dunlop had 4, David Hewston Brown 3, Chris Flanagan 2, David Dunne 2 and three others who caught 2 each including their first ever, Mary Flanagan from Boston, Thomas Ahlers from Germany and Pat Cassidy from Monoghan. Fish of the week was Sean Moogan’s 11lbs1oz fish off Finlough.
Third week was slower on the numbers front but we definitely made up for it as regards quality. 11 fish were landed for the week, with the Kitchen/Cooper party accounting for 6 of these. Best of all was Charles Cooper’s 17lbs6ozs fish off the Quarry pool on a small Gary Dog tube. Fish were also taken by Margaret Downes, Michael Darling, Philip McGarrity, Mick Kelly and Martin Ceillier.
Last week in June produced 19 fish, which by contrast 15 or 16 years ago was always the years top week. There still were some memorable moments. Father and son team of Reinhard and Nico Mittmann accounted for 8 of the total. The Possingers, Fred and Gerda had 3. We also had four visitors who managed to land their first ever salmon. Michael Tierney from Dublin had a 8lbs13oz fish off Doolough, Elaine Corps managed to outfish her husband Mark with a sea liced 8lbs6ozs fish off Fin and Angelika Krieg and Benny Weltz both from Germany had fish of 3lbs13ozs and 7lbs2ozs respectively.
That now brings the season total to 152.
With broken weather forecast over the coming hopefully we will see a steady increase in the number of fish entering the system.
