ROCK HOUSE

July was warm and sunny in most parts with prolonged sunny periods in places, broken by thunder storms, with heavy falls of rain all be it localized.

The first 10 days or so each month so far, has produced the most prolonged rain fall and  with it some good fishing, however Met Eirann reported overall lower than average rain fall for July.

Temperatures ranged from 15 degrees C at Knock airport to 27 at Oak Park.

There haven't been many grilse about in general, but there has been intermittent good spells of fishing when conditions are right .

Jim Haughy was the first rod on the first of July in dry sunny conditions, not much was happening but he did catch a sea trout in the late evening.

A party from Mount Falcon caught 2 salmon and 10 sea trout on 3rd July ; ten days later they lost 2 salmon.

The Ryan party made their annual fishing trip to the Owenduff from the 5th to the 11th July and came across 3 salmon 6.5 / 5.5 and 5.0 pounds and 24 seatrout up to 4.5 pounds the largest.  22 sea trout were released and all caught on barbless hooks and we must commend the fishing party for doing so. Conditions were favorable for most of the time during their stay, but mixed fortunes later on in the month.

Frank chambers having no luck on 15th July and on the same day same beat, but Jane Hall found 2 salmon and 3 sea trout in about an hour and “a half of magic” as she described it.....

Jackie Deffeley had 2 nice seatrout in the upper reaches in good and misty conditions.  Chris Huxley had 1 salmon of 5 pounds released, but the same day Martin Davison had no luck. Cathal Walsh had a grilse of about 5 pound around the same days.

Dermot Coyne and Gérard Ganadioux didn’t catch anything on 20th and 21st due to low water and sunny weather.

So we have just the above records for July 2014 (not all of our anglers fill in their record sheets) which makes a total of 40 sea trout and 9 salmon.

Tight lines!
